The Walk-In Workshop provides guests with the opportunity to create unique glass art. Much different than the Blow Your Own Program (hot glass/glassblowing), the WIW specializes in fusing (cold glass). Our friendly and knowledgeable staff teach guests the basics of fusing glass in a kiln. Learn to cut glass, arrange the glass into a desired composition and become familiar with the fuse cycle. Since pieces spend 1-2 cycles in the kiln, the finished product must be picked up (or shipped) approximately 2 weeks later. Projects include platters, vases, necklace pendants, nightlights, bowls and suncatchers (just to name a few) and range in price anywhere from $12.50 - $135. Children must be 12 years of age or older in order to cut glass (younger children may participate with adult supervision).

The beveled suncatcher/ornament project is appropriate for all ages, especially children 2-12 years old. Smooth, rounded glass nuggets are adhered to a base (bevel) with a special UV glue. Once exposed to our UV light box or sunlight, the glue dries in approximately 30 seconds. Bevels are the only project that may be taken home the day of a visit.

Not an artist? We don't accept this as an excuse. Most Walk-In Workshop visitors have never worked with glass before. Visit the Glassworks Walk-In Workshop to make your very own masterpiece, but be careful, you could become addicted!

No reservation required, although recommended for groups of 10 or more. Group Rates Available

WALK-IN ACTIVITIES

Beveled Glass Sun Catcher or Ornament

Various shapes
Use our special laminate or glass-like translucent paint to create a decoration for your window.

Pieces may be taken with you at time of creation.
Appropriate for ages 5 & up. Younger children can participate with adult assistance.

Glass Coasters

Sets of 4 or 6
Make a functional conversation piece for your next party. Each coaster is made with two pieces of glass. You begin by selecting a base piece of glass upon which you will decorate. We'll then place an additional piece of clear glass on top of your decorative base glass to form an extra thick flat glass coaster. Each coaster will have four glass nuggets of your choice glued to the bottom.

Pieces must be picked up at a later date, or shipped for an additional cost.
Appropriate for ages 12 and up.

Fused Glass Sushi Tray

Make your own art glass sushi tray by layering decorative components on top of a base piece of glass. The glass will then be formed into a functional piece of art.

Pieces must be picked up at a later date, or shipped for an additional cost.

Pendant

Create a small-scale wearable fused piece of art. These small fusing projects use all the same techniques as the large pieces. The pendant can either have a hole running through it or a metal finding. You pick a base piece of flat glass upon which you will create an image or abstract decoration. Walk-In Workshop staff will teach you how to score the glass using a carbide glass cutter and will give you design tips to help you create a work of art.

Pieces must be picked up at a later date, or shipped for an additional cost.
Appropriate for ages 12 & up

Fused & Slumped Vases

Laminating Glass Summary
Our laminated art projects can be made and taken home the same day. We use special nontoxic light-sensitive glue. Just a few minutes of exposure to ultra violet rays from the sun or a light box will chemically activate the glue making a strong permanent bond between the glass pieces. The laminating projects are appropriate for ages 5 & up. Younger children may participate with adult assistance.

Fusing and Slumping Glass Summary
To fuse, each piece is heated in our kiln to 1,480 degrees. Over the course of 17 hours the small decorative pieces of glass fuse or "melt" into one piece. Some pieces require a second firing; this is called the slumping cycle. During this second firing the fused piece of glass is heated on a ceramic mold so that it slumps, "falls" or "sags" into your chosen shape. All fused and slumped artwork must be picked up at a later date. Processing time depends on firing schedule. It is recommended to discuss your exact time frame with Walk-In Workshop staff.

Project Time Length
The time it takes to complete a project varies. The general rule is that larger projects take more time because there is more surface area to decorate. Most fusing and slumping projects take 45 to 60 minutes to design while the laminated or painted projects take 20 to 40 minutes. These time estimates differ depending on the individual.

Pick-Up or Shipping
Please speak with the Walk-In Workshop staff at the time the piece is designed to estimate a pickup time for fused and slumped pieces. Staff can also quote shipping rates. All work is sent UPS ground fully insured.
